BAB 033/20: Enhancing capacity of universities to initiate and participate in clusters development on innovation and sustainability principles (ERASMUS Project UniClaD)

Initial situation

Participation in clusters enables higher education institutions to provide students of different performance levels with practical activities in various projects. In addition, the reference to concrete projects also creates prospects for subsequent employment for the students. In addition, applied research can be better oriented to the real needs of companies and possibly also attract additional financial resources. Many higher education institutions are already involved in cluster structures, which, however, often only exist in theoretical connections and have no real activities. They often exist only in associations within individual sectors, are very limited thematically and also spatially and do not follow the actual purpose.

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to develop potentials at higher education institutions for increased participation in clusters with agricultural enterprises. This is to be done at different levels of education (Master, PhD). Companies, science and education should be sensitised in this respect in order to create interesting educational offers within clusters. This also requires adapted administrative structures, research work that is as adapted as possible to real needs, and organisational forms that promote innovation and are based on sustainability principles.

Status of the project

After the preparations and the development of theoretical foundations in the first year of the project, the planned work processes were concretised and work was done on the planning of study tours, work-shops, the necessary foundations for the establishment of expertise centres and pilot projects as well as on the development of study courses. As in 2020, there were special challenges due to the Covid 19 pandemic, so that some activities based on personal meetings were postponed until 2022. As a result of the Russia-Ukraine war, the activities that had already been planned in detail could not be carried out again. The project was shut down until December 2022 and should continue to run as planned from January 2023. Certain planned tasks have to be adapted.

Work 2023

In 2023, work will continue on the communication and discussion of information. A one-week study tour for representatives from AZ, MD and UA is to be planned and organised in Austria, documents for workshops with theoretical and practical information on cluster activities in Austria are to be prepared. The other tasks as described above are also being worked on. An extension of the project due to the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war situation in Ukraine until the end of 2024 has been approved by the ERASMUS+ Programme Authority.
