This project subjected the multi-layered aspects of small-scale agriculture in the 21st century to a comprehensive analysis both in the Austrian and in the concrete regional context and places them in the context of the international development of small-scale agriculture.
The following central questions were at the centre of the analysis:
What are small-scale farms?
What do small-scale farms stand for?
What value is placed on small-scale agriculture?
How can small-scale farming structures be supported and promoted?
The following project work was done:
Preparation of the concrete survey plans for the 4 survey regions.
Preparation of a modular, semi-structured questionnaire for conducting the surveys among the different target groups:
Farm managers of small farms inside and outside cooperatives
Managers of cooperatives inside and outside the survey regions
Regional stakeholders
Conducting the survey work in the 4 survey regions
Conducting expert interviews in the areas of cooperatives, district chambers of farmers
Evaluation of the survey results
Preparation of regional context analyses in the 4 survey regions
Updating parts of the quantitative data analyses
Carrying out the remaining expert interviews
Synthesis of all project parts (theory, data analyses, interviews) to a summarising analysis
Development of recommendations and strategic approaches
