From 25 to 28 March 2026, the annual Conference for Free and Open Source Software for Geographic Information Systems took place. Other key themes of the conference included Open Data and OpenStreetMap. This year's venue, Göttingen, saw a record number of 1,000 participants. Nevertheless, as is customary, it remained possible to hold professional discussions in a pleasant atmosphere—accessible and on equal footing—as well as to explore specific questions in depth during workshops. While last year's focus was dominated by AI, machine learning, and language models, this year's contributions were further enhanced by a particular emphasis on remote sensing using satellite imagery. Naturally, "evergreens" such as database management and general developments in the open-source world were also strongly represented. All recorded presentations are available at https://media.ccc.de/c/fossgis2026.
Florian Stender, from the BAB Geoinformatics team, attended the conference and presented GIS analyses of broadband coverage in Austrian mountain farming from the Mapping Gender project during the poster session.
