The Austrian wine sector faces economic challenges due to changing socio-economic conditions (e.g. digitalisation, changes in consumer behaviour, availability of active substances in plant protection, climate change, labour availability). Changes are also imminent at the level of the legal framework.
In order to be better equipped to meet future challenges in an international market environment, the Austrian wine sector needs efficient tools at the operational and sectoral management, processing and marketing levels. This is particularly true in a highly regulated market. Efficient administrative instruments are also essential for market surveillance by the authorities. The tools currently available, in particular the e-government application ‘Wein-Online’ developed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management for the Austrian wine industry, will no longer meet these requirements in the future.
Objectives and research questions
The objective of the project is to provide scientific support to the Austrian wine sector and wine market administration in meeting EU requirements and tackling future tasks.
Through the analysis, design and development of a data collection tool, once successfully implemented by the administration (not part of the project), BAB, BAB Project and the Austrian research sector in general will be able to provide long-term data on the wine market with high spatial and temporal resolution and quality at low provision costs. The analyses made possible by this will allow continuous improvements in quality and efficiency to strengthen the competitiveness of the Austrian agricultural sector.
The self-contained work comprises the following services, which can be divided into seven work packages (WP):
• WP 1: Project management and communication
• WP 2: Analysis of the existing system
• WP 3: Analysis of options and planning the development of a data collection tool
• WP 4: Development of a data collection tool
• WP 5: Testing the data collection tool
• WP 6: Concept for analysing potential use cases for data utilisation
• WP 7: Dissemination of results
