Round table: A bioeconomy vision for Central Europe (BIOECO-UP)

How should the bioeconomy in Central Europe be structured in the future? Should the focus be on technological innovation, economic growth, material cycles or the preservation of ecosystem services? How can societal participation be taken into account? These and other questions were addressed by the ten participants at the high-level round table, which took place on 10 Sept 2025 at the Federal Institute for Agricultural Economics, Rural and Mountain Research as part of the BIOECO-UP project. The discussion was conducted in the Austrian context and from the perspectives of policy, society, research, economy, and across these stakeholder types. The results of all round tables from the project partner countries (AT, CZ, HR, HU, IT, PL, SI, SK) as well as information on future framework conditions within the EU will serve as the basis for formulating a bioeconomy vision, which is expected to be published in the first half of 2026.

The project “BIOECO-UP – Circular bioeconomy market uptake and policy support in Central Europe” (CE0100254) is supported by the Interreg Central Europe 2021-2027 programme with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund. Further information on the project, including events and project results, can be found on the website https://www.interreg-central.eu/projects/bioeco-up/.
