From June 3 to 5, 2025, the consortium of the EU Horizon project RUSTIK gathered in Joensuu, Finland, for its fourth project meeting. Around 50 participants from the 14 Living Labs and scientific partner institutions came together to discuss insights and methodological approaches for shaping rural transformation pathways. From BAB, the colleagues Ingrid Machold, Karin Schroll, and Daria Ernst took part in the meeting.
Day 1
The first day focused on the 14 Living Labs. Results, experiences with challenges, and potential solutions were presented and discussed. A key topic was how data can support regions in tackling rural challenges more effectively and in designing more targeted policy measures.
Day 2
The second day centered on the current results and next steps within the different work packages. Discussions included topics such as Agent-Based Land Modelling, Rural Proofing or Territorial Impact Assessment, as well as Rural Functions. To close the day, the Work Package Leads met for a session to further develop the concept and coordination of the Synthesis Work Package, where BAB is having the lead.
Day 3
After two intensive days of meetings and discussions, the third day featured an excursion. The first stop was the municipality of Juuka, where local strategies for dealing with demographic change were presented. The excursion then continued to Koli National Parc, where the project meeting concluded with the first regional workshop of the RUSTIK project. Three Living Labs shared their experiences and discussed demographic challenges and possible approaches for action. Particular attention was given to the perspectives and needs of youngsters.
