AWI/179/17: Volume flows in Austria’s grain sector

Martin Brückler

In the course of the study "Future Crop Production" conducted in 2015, it became clear that there are certain information gaps with regard to important structural and production data. In particular, the lack of fundamental analyses on the processing and marketing structures of agricultural primary products was pointed out. The cereal sector is considered one of the most important areas of primary agricultural production in Austria. Within crop production, the largest shares of agricultural value added are generated in this sector.

The aim of the study was to present in detail the development of Austrian grain processing capacities in the grain sector. For this purpose, the volume flows with processing capacities in the individual use areas of food, animal feed and in the industrial use area were to be presented, which also included import and export statistics. A precise analysis of the individual areas of use and the subdivision into the respective specific uses are aimed at an improved sectoral presentation. By looking at the period over time (1995-2015), changes in use should also be elicited. The different product qualities of the grain and their specific use were taken into account in the volume flows. The results of the study were also to be used as a basis for the sector analyses located in the project data pool. Flow charts and clear diagrams were the core elements.

In the course of the project, existing statistics were merged and harmonised in 2017. In addition, data availability was improved through expert interviews. The data collection and the data evaluation were thus completed in 2017. Based on the evaluated data, a model was created to represent the grain sector. In a further project step, the visualisation of the data was started and largely completed.

The activities in 2018 included the written processing of the results in a report as well as the visualisation in volume flows (Sankey diagrams) and their provision.
